Kelly Rosati, a representative from James Dobson‘s Focus on the Family, recently met with the Obama administration to talk about adoption programs and children in foster care.
Rosati actually had positive things to say about them after the meeting!
But Josh Montez of CitizenLink can’t help but bring this conversation back to the fundamentalist right where he thinks it belongs:
Kelly Rosati, adoptive mother of four and senior director of Focus on the Family’s Sanctity of Human Life department, was among those in attendance.
“The Obama administration is really listening,” she said, “and wanted to know from those on the front lines what could be better done to serve the kids in America’s foster care system.”
Unfortunately, the president supports placing some of those kids with homosexual couples.
Obviously, that’s the real travesty here: Placing foster kids with the gays. Those kids might actually grow up to be happy, functioning individuals. Can’t have that now.
That’s not the only instance where a Focus rep said something you never would have expected to hear a year or two ago.
Their judicial analyst, Bruce Hausknecht, recently remarked that the organization would not oppose a Supreme Court nominee just because that person was gay.
“Our concern at the Supreme Court is judicial philosophy,” Hausknecht said. “Sexual orientation only becomes an issue if it effects their judging.”
Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst at Focus, says just like a nominee’s ethnicity and life experience, homosexuality should not be a litmus test.
And once again, other Christian Right groups are stepping in to denounce them:
Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, contends the position held by Focus on the Family is the equivalent of “moral retreat.”
“It’s not just the damage caused by Focus on the Family’s moral retreat on the issue,” Glenn argues. “[That explanation] will be used by homosexual activists and their allies in the media to further marginalize and delegitimize any pro-family organization that continues to take a biblical standard.”
(By the way, which one am I? A homosexual activist or a media ally? I can’t decide…)
…
I’m not saying Focus is becoming a more liberal group. But it’s clear they are trying to broaden their spectrum. Either they’re sick of the reputation they’ve earned after years of Dobson at the helm… or they aren’t gettng the donations they need from their base.
Let’s not forget that Focus on the Family is the group that put out the fictional letter from a Christian living in 2012 explaining the horrors that would occur if Obama were elected president.
