Richards is happy that God’s plan worked out for him! The family of the murder victim may be hearing lines from friends and clergy like The Devil did it!
If you want to bring slavery into the the conversation then you can totally understand slave owners in the 1850s. “Hey, don’t blame me for our peculiar institution. God says in the good book me beating slaves is OK as long as I don’t kill them!”
I’m pretty sure the hypothetical slave in question would have a difference of opinion.
