Former President Donald Trump’s lawyers filed a defamation suit targeting the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Dr. Anthony Fauci. The suit states Dr. Fauci “damaged and continues to damage Donald J. Trump’s reputation in both speech and in writing.” If found guilty Dr. Fauci faces a 1.3 billion dollar bill.

But why is Trump suing in the first place?

Dr. Fauci And The Trump Variant

In recent weeks the Delta variant of the coronavirus has mercilessly sent scores of unvaccinated Americans to hospitals and some to the morgue. Responding to the crisis, a frustrated Dr. Fauci commented to friends and family Delta should be rebranded as the Trump variant. Sources say he received a lot of laughs and positive feedback.

And that’s when things started going wrong.

Professor Andrew Canard teaches at Miskatonic University and is a longtime friend of Fauci’s. Professor Canard is also an author whose books include, Why People Vote Against Their Interests and The Dunning-Kruger Effect Is One A Hell Of A Drug. “Anthony’s been facing a lot of stress for a prolonged period of time,” he explained. “Vulnerable people can take a joke too far.”

Dr. Fauci went on a variety of late-night shows promoting vaccination as well as his new nickname for Delta. Sure, he got chuckles, but he also got a lawsuit.

Trump’s Lawsuit

Many are wondering why is the former President suing for such a large amount of money. The answer is simple. If he wins the case and somehow obtains that large sum, then he can pay off his creditors as well as fight the legion of lawsuits he is facing. On the other hand, sources close to Trump believe he’d use the funds to pay for a new scam.

Legal experts don’t believe Trump has a chance of winning in court. The First Amendment protects free speech and covers jokes, gibes, and pantomimes.
