When Christian Bale won a Golden Globe last night for his portrayal of former Vice President Dick Cheney in the movie Vice, he did something rather unusual: He thanked Satan.

Even if it was a joke, I can’t recall that happening in any other awards show…

Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration on how to play this role.

Hey, it beats thanking Jesus.

It’s not the first time someone has mocked the tradition of giving thanks to God for their victory at an awards show. In 2007, comedian Kathy Griffin won a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy and celebrated it by saying, “I want you to know that no one has less to do with this award than Jesus. He didn’t help me a bit!… So all I can say is, ‘Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now.'”

In 2014, Sarah Silverman won an Emmy for writing for a variety special and gave a scientific thank-you:

We’re just all made of molecules and we’re hurtling through space right now. Thank you.

And Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais ended the 2011 show by saying, “Thank you to God for making me an atheist.”

But Satan. That’s a new one. Well played, Christian Bale.
