Michelle Edmisten, a Tennessee mother, is furious that her child was indoctrinated into Islam in her Social Studies class.

Did I say indoctrinated? I’m just kidding. Edmisten is furious that her child was taught Islam exists.

That’s the only explanation I can come up with for why she’d be upset over questions like these:

IslamSchoolExam

What’s Islam’s holy book?

What are the five pillars?

Those are basic facts students should know about a faith that has more than a billion adherents. Just like Muslim students (and everyone else) should have to know that Christians believe Jesus is a prophet and accepting his divinity is the only path to salvation.

Religion plays an important role in our world. To put it more broadly, people who think differently from us shape the world we live in. That’s why it’s crucial we understand the building blocks of their ideologies.

If the textbook called for students to convert to Islam, let’s talk. Until then, there’s nothing to see.

Edmisten’s daughter can remain ignorant, but the school has no business dumbing down the curriculum because of one angry, irrational parent.
