During an appearance on the QAnon-promoting podcast “And We Know” last week, FOX Nation host Lara Logan claimed that Charles Darwin came up with the theory of evolution because of Jewish financial backers.

And if you’re wondering how any of that makes any sense… it doesn’t.

Media Matters has the transcript:

What is the only thing on Earth that is actually renewable? It’s life. And they can, you know, go back to the big-bang theory and Darwin. I mean, when I found out, does anyone know when, who employed Darwin? Where Darwinism comes from? Well, I mean, you know, look it up, the Rothschilds. It goes right back to 10 Downing Street and the same people who employed Darwin and that’s when Darwin, you know, wrote his theory of evolution and so on and so on. And I’m not saying that none of that is true. I’m just saying Darwin was hired by someone to come up with the theory. Right? Based on evidence. OK, fine.

When Republicans accuse the “Rothschilds” of something, it’s no different from when they blame George Soros. Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene blamed the same family for funding a “space laser” that began the California wildfires. It’s a coded way for conservatives to blame wealthy Jewish people for whatever they don’t like. It’s blatantly antisemitic. And in this case, it’s bizarre for multiple reasons.

For one, Darwin had ample funding already. His biography notes that he was independently wealthy from an inheritance, invested in “land and securities” that involved newly built railroads, and had a willing publisher.

More importantly, discrediting Darwin wouldn’t do a damn thing to negate the substance of evolution. The fundamentals of the theory have been confirmed in countless different ways. Suggesting there was illicit funding involved in bringing the theory to the masses wouldn’t explain why other scientists, without that same funding, have come to the exact same conclusion.

And finally, let’s suppose her wacky conspiracy theory had any semblance of truth in it. Then the people she’s trying to malign would come out looking pretty damn intelligent. Why on earth would anyone be ashamed of being linked to the theory that explains how life, in all its forms, came to be all over the planet?

Logan was once a journalist with serious credentials. Now she can’t even come up with a believable lie. While the rest of us did “look it up,” Logan couldn’t even be bothered to cite any sources for her bizarre claim. It’s no wonder, then, that she’s employed by a network that has never been interested in facts.
