Darrell Furgason is one of the candidates running for the Chilliwack School District Board (in British Columbia) and his platform seems pretty sensible: He supports “Academic Excellence,” “Inclusivity for all,” and a “Quality, fact-based curriculum” that promotes critical thinking.

The problem is that he believes none of that in practice. Furgason is actually an anti-LGBTQ Young Earth Creationist whose primary allegiance is to the Bible and not the students.

Here’s a brief glimpse at some of the things he’s posted on Facebook as director of the Worldview Studies Center, a Christian non-profit.

Even the Chilliwack Progress, which has been posting announcements about all the candidates for the open seats, couldn’t make sense of the discrepancy between Furgason’s stated goals and actual beliefs.

… despite his desires to achieve academic excellence; inclusivity for all; quality, fact-based curriculum; and parents rights in education, it is among his postings on his Worldview Studies Center page where there are links to websites expressing Islamophobia, homophobia, and claims that the world is actually 6,000 years old.

While his postings on social media are inflammatory, speaking of a clash of civilizations and other far right conspiracies, his school board candidacy press release included none of that.

The scary thing is, unless people are made aware of those fundamentalist views, they might be tempted to vote for him. That’s the problem with politics: The people with the worst beliefs are often the ones who think they deserve a position of power.

In this case, it would be a disaster for students and parents who actually support critical thinking, inclusivity, and facts.

The election is October 20.
