Barnaby Joyce, the anti-LGBTQ former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, last seen on this site leaving his wife for his pregnant girlfriend, posted a video on Twitter that will (yet again) make you wonder what the hell he’s thinking.

The current lawmaker trashed climate change — or at least the idea that governments should take action to reverse its effects — before saying Australians would be “nailed” (in a bad way) unless they submitted to a “higher authority.”

… Now, you don’t have to convince me that the climate’s not changing. It is changing! And my problem’s always been whether you believe a new tax is going to change it back.

… I just don’t want the government any more in my life, I’m sick of the government being in my life.

And the other thing… we’ve got to acknowledge is, you know, there’s a higher authority that’s beyond our comprehension — right up there in the sky — and unless we understand that that’s gotta be respected, then we’re just fools. We’re going to get nailed.

Don’t get thrown off by his supposed acceptance of climate change. It’s like a Creationist saying he accepts “microevolution” while denying the actual science.

As many Australians would freely tell you, people like Jones are the reason they, too, don’t want government in their lives. When more intelligent people are in charge, however, government can indeed be a force for good.

The irony in all this is that the man who replaced Jones after his post-scandal resignation, Michael McCormack, has been a proponent of action on climate change. Not a bad position to take given the recent bushfires spreading across parts of the nation.

But his boss quickly dismissed that idea:

McCormack was immediately contradicted by Scott Morrison upon the Prime Minister’s return from his holiday in Hawaii. Mr Morrison said Australia was doing enough.

This is what happens when you put traditional conservatives in charge of your country. You get scientific ignorance and pleas for God to fix everything. Even the disgraced officials sound no different from the ones in charge.
