With Donald Trump rescinding protections for transgender students, forcing them to pee in the wrong bathrooms in states where conservatives have power, it was only a matter of time before Christians came to his defense with even more bigotry.

Cue Dr. Michael Brown, who responded to Caitlin Jenner‘s recent video slamming Trump by denying Jenner’s gender.

Then it got worse.

… you don’t turn the world upside-down for that [transgender] kid. You don’t put the six-year-old boy who thinks he’s a girl into the girl’s bathroom with other six-year-old girls and confuse them! “I thought Johnny was a boy! Now Johnny is Jane! I don’t understand!”

They don’t need tolerance. They need to be told boys are boys, and girls are girls, and Johnny is confused, so be nice to Johnny, but he’s confused.

Let the school have a place, if you need — just like you have special facilities for handicapped. This is some type of handicap. Mental, emotional. Some type of handicap, alright?

Treating children like there’s something wrong with them on the basis of their genitalia would only make the problem worse. And keeping children in ignorance will only confuse them more. Interacting with trans kids from a young age, and getting used to the issues they deal with, will make this a non-issue as they get older. Just as Brown shares public bathrooms with plenty of gay men — whether he knows it or not — he probably has been around plenty of trans men, too, without incident. His baseless fear-mongering is pointless.

At one point, attempting to rebut the “tolerance” argument, Brown asks: “Since when is it tolerant to tell a girl ‘You just have to get used to seeing a boy’s private parts in your locker room’?”

I’ve been in a lot of bathrooms and locker rooms. I have never once stared at someone else’s private parts. I guess they do things differently at the gyms Brown goes to, where everyone apparently dances naked for the world to see.

Even his title betrays his ignorance: “No, You Cannot Choose Your Gender.” As if transgender people are flipping a switch every day to decide what gender they are. Brown doesn’t know what he’s talking about — and clearly doesn’t know any trans people to run his script by — and yet he pretends to be an expert in the matter.

That’s a strategy right out of the conservative Christian playbook.

And it’s just another reason you shouldn’t take anything they say seriously.
