Because there’s nothing else worth discussing these days, right-wing radio host Janet Mefferd discussed Bigfoot and UFO sightings with former Family Research Council fellow Tim Dailey on her American Family Radio show last Friday.
Not only were those hoaxes real, they claimed, but Satan was simply covering up the proof.
Mefferd asked Dailey how Christians should interpret reported Bigfoot sightings and how it ties into a “paranormal conspiracy” allegedly orchestrated by Satan.
Dailey said it was telling that “many, many reliable observers” have reported spotting Bigfoot but yet there is a “virtual absence” of tangible proof that would convince the skeptical public that such claims were credible.
“It’s real. It’s a projection. It’s a demonic virtual reality, but it’s not nuts-and-bolts, in this case, flesh-and-blood creatures,” Dailey said.
Riiiiiight. That makes way more sense than “they don’t exist.”
Mefferd, being the good skeptic for all of a few seconds, asked why those sightings always happened at night when a daytime appearance could mean clearer photos and more tangible evidence.
… Dailey said that the devil designs Bigfoot sightings to happen when it is too dark to take clear photographs.
“The vast majority happen in the dead of night and you wonder, ‘Why is this?’ And then if you remember the biblical verse about the powers of darkness that love darkness rather than light,” Dailey told Mefferd.
“That’s right. That’s important,” Mefferd replied.
It’s never good when a radio host would make herself look better by admitting she wasn’t listening but just felt obligated to respond.
In any case, she also asked why Satan would even bother to play this game with us. What was in it for Him?
“It’s part of the devil’s modus operandi. He has always used this kind of phenomena to, once again destabilize, to engender fear, to open us up to the possibilities of other realities and other beings and then we begin getting involved with demonic spirits. So yeah, all through history there have been many, many different varieties of beings that are primarily spiritual beings that have terrorized civilizations and peoples and non-Christian cultures are very aware of this,” Dailey said.
I’m not sure how Satan’s work here would be destabilizing or scary when the people Satan might want to frighten the most are the very people most skeptical of the supernatural.
I don’t believe in Bigfoot for the same reason I don’t believe in the devil: there’s no evidence of either. So there’s also nothing about them to fear.
Maybe the problem is Mefferd and Dailey are pretending to be logical about two topics — religion and paranormal activity — that defy reason. It’s not meant to make sense. So there’s no need to try to figure out what the hell they’re talking about.
