In a sign of what happens when you let a right-wing government take over your country, Poland just effectively banned legal abortion in the country.

The procedure was already illegal, with exceptions for cases of rape or if the woman’s life is in danger. On Thursday, however, the nation’s constitutional tribunal ruled that the procedure would also be illegal in the case of fetal abnormalities. That means any woman who needs or wants to obtain an abortion either has to do it secretly, under threat of arrest, or travel to another country.

A protest took place on Friday in the city of Wroclaw after Poland’s top court effectively banned abortions. The poster says ‘This is our country.’

The tribunal ruled… that abortions on the basis of fetal abnormalities violated the dignity of human life, a principle enshrined in the Polish Constitution. It further held that such abortions go against the principle of nondiscrimination and respect for human life, and that a fetus acquires those rights at conception.

It’s forced birth even if it leads to unnecessary suffering for the baby.

Naturally, the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, led by Jarosław Kaczyński and in coordination with President Andrzej Duda, celebrated the decision.

President Andrzej Duda welcomed the court’s decision, his spokesman, Blazej Spychalski, said in an interview with the Polish Press Agency. “We are expressing our satisfaction that the tribunal stood on the side of life,” he said.

They celebrated the ruling because they haven’t been able to pass the abortion restrictions legislatively. But the court is already politicized:

Eleven of its 12 judges were appointed by the governing party, and the head of the tribunal, [Julia] Przylebska, is a longtime friend of Mr. Kaczynski.

If all this sounds all too familiar to you, well, that’s because it is.

Republicans are rushing to put Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court because they may soon lack the power needed to reverse long-standing precedent regarding women’s rights. Considering how Barrett refused to answer a question about whether abortion should result in the execution of the mother, the writing is already on the wall. She will do everything in her power to prevent other women — those with fewer resources than she has — from controlling their own lives.

These radical religious conservatives are so “pro-life,” they’ll do anything for a fetus while neglecting to take care of those already living. They would rather see women suffer than provide the resources to give that mother a better quality of life.

It’s our future, too, except we have the opportunity to change that next week — if Democrats win the White House and Senate and waste no time in expanding the judiciary at all levels.
