Earlier this month, a California judge ruled that a Christian baker had the right to discriminate against a lesbian customer who wanted him to make the same sort of wedding cake he makes for straight couples. It was a disturbing ruling to say the least.
But that didn’t stop former Colorado State Rep. and current Christian talk show host Gordon Klingenschmitt from using that story as a springboard to trash LGBTQ people even more. He said on his “Pray In Jesus Name” show that gays and lesbians are determined to make Christians “endorse their sin”… even though all they want is the same treatment as straight customers in a place of business.
Then he got even weirder.
“This lesbian couple, like so many other activists, they are not content to have their sin in private, they have got to flaunt it in public,” Klingenschmit complained. “And not just in any public, they have got to come into the Christian business owner’s place of business and force them to join in a sort of perverted threesome … Those demonic purveyors of sodomy are trying to force Christians to participate and in them is the spirit of persecution.”
To recap, Klingenschmitt is saying that lesbians asking bakers for a cake they already sell is the equivalent of forcing Christians to join them in an unwanted sexual tryst.
(As if they’d ever want that bigot baker in their bedroom.)
This is where his mind goes, though. The simple act of taking someone’s money for a product you already make becomes all about sex because it involves a gay person. The lesbians in question didn’t make this about sex. Klingenschmitt did. He, like so many Christians, can’t even mention LGBTQ people without immediately pointing out what they do (or don’t do) in the bedroom.
That’s his problem, not theirs.
