Earlier this week, Tennessee lawmakers held hearings on Senate Bill 1236, which would “prohibits abortions from the point a fetal heartbeat is detected.” It’s essentially a total ban on abortions. There are no exceptions for victims of rape or incest.

The bill is sponsored by State Sen. Mark Pody, who, earlier this year, filed a different bill forcing state officials to “defend natural marriage” regardless of the legality of marriage equality.

Before the hearings began, Pody gave a speech in which he told fellow anti-abortion zealots that all he wanted to do was defeat Satan.

… I’m not against any colleagues, whether they’re standing with me or not. I’m against Satan and I’m standing with God.

We will not back up. We will not back down. We will not turn around. Our armor says “We face the enemy.” We have no protection when we run. We have no protection for our back.

So, Satan in this case would be… the women who want control over their own bodies?

We know who Pody is not talking about. He’s not talking about the rapists. He’d much rather punish women by forcing them to have their rapists’ babies. But that’s just the GOP for you. The cruelty never stops, there’s always religious rhetoric to justify their despicable actions, and they always pretend they’re the compassionate ones.

You can’t defeat Satan when you’re using him as a role model.
