Nomad had these comments to say on my recent article concerning Roy Moore, and he’s spot on. I apologise myself for overlooking what is clearly absolutely terrible.
While the accusations against Moore are serious now, he’s called for LGBT people to be killed by the state in the past. And I’m just aghast that he keeps being reported as the guy who only called for them to be jailed, and he became “controversial” because of it, right up until his predilection for young teen girls came to the forefront.
He is calling for the penalty of death to be applied to people who violate religious laws, and… this doesn’t even get covered. Instead he’s just that wacky guy who held a tiny pistol up at a campaign rally, ha ha, let’s all laugh at the goofy guy in a cowboy hat. Right up until he’s revealed to have inappropriately touched a girl.
The key quote is this:
The State carries the power of the sword, that is, the power to prohibit conduct with physical penalties, such as confinement and even execution. It must use that power to prevent the subversion of children toward this lifestyle, to not encourage a criminal lifestyle.
He’s since tried to say that he wasn’t endorsing it, just saying that he was listing the powers that the state has, but that’s bullshit, the state has no such power.
Yet.
But he wants it to have it. And that’s been largely acceptable. Advocating killing gay people is merely “controversial”. But when he gets accused of inappropriate behavior with a teen girl, suddenly we wake up. There’s more than one double standard at work here. If he wants to kill people for being gay, well that’s just controversial and it gets sanitized down to “wants to put them in jail”. If he puts the moves on a teen girl, STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES.
That’s serious too, but I’m pissed off at how much more attention it’s got than calling for the death of people such as me and my boyfriend.
