New poll reveals just 5% of British Christians became Christian after leaving school
Reading Time: 3 minutes I love these demographics of religion pieces that come out. This is from Humanists UK: Just 5% of Christians say that they became Christians after reaching the age at which they left school, a new poll commissioned by the Church of England has revealed. The poll, carried out by ComRes, also reveals that just 6% of British […]
Growing Numbers of Muslim Refugees Are Converting
Reading Time: 2 minutes According to the Guardian: A growing number of Muslim refugees in Europe are converting to Christianity, according to churches, which have conducted mass baptisms in some places. Reliable data on conversions is not available but anecdotal evidence suggests a pattern of rising church attendance by Muslims who have fled conflict, repression and economic hardship in […]
Leaving My Religion Was Nothing Like Entering It
Reading Time: 6 minutes People love to say that atheism is a religion. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the smug assertion “I don’t have enough faith to be an atheist.” I know good and well what they’re trying to say, but I always want to ask them, “Does that mean faith is a bad thing now, […]
Why We Don’t Need Atheist Missionaries (Video)
Reading Time: 6 minutes [Today’s guest post is excerpted from a talk by Katie Kruse given at Zeteticon 2014 in Fargo, North Dakota] Any magician will tell you that the easiest audience to fool is one that consists of knowledgeable adults. The older and “wiser” we become the more fixed we become in our own perception of the world. Just like […]
I’m back from holiday, and the only person who pissed me off was Jesus…
Reading Time: 2 minutes So we (my partner, twin toddler boys and myself) had a wonderful stay-cation in Cornwall. Beautiful accomodation, weather, countryside and beaches. An all-round winner. The boys loved it. The only moment of furrowed brows (well, mine) was at a lovely seaside town called Perranporth, where we stopped at the beach. Walking back, I saw a bunch of purple-shirted youngsters dancing and generally having fun surrounded by a small horde of beach-going holiday-making children.
Getting off Mount Atheism
Reading Time: 3 minutes Here’s an interesting analogy that gives a new perspective on different worldviews and how we move from one to another, trying to find the one that explains reality best.
How Could an Atheist Convert to Christianity?
Reading Time: 5 minutes I’ve argued that well-informed atheists can’t be moved by intellectual arguments for religion. Let’s test that by examining three high-profile ex-atheists. What made them convert, and what does that say about my hypothesis?
How evangelicals are making children their missionaries in public schools
Reading Time: 4 minutes Katherine Stewart in The Guardian has detailed this scary phenomenon which has been a problem bubbling in the educational undercurrents for some time now. Gives me the chill (as an educator myself). Adults can’t proselytise in schools – but kids can. Hence a new scam by fundamentalists to circumvent church-state separation When he was 15, […]
“This is Guaranteed to Convert You!”
Reading Time: 2 minutes Imagine the claim, “I hold in my hand a pamphlet that will undercut your worldview!” How would a Christian and an atheist respond to this? The same way? Or would they respond differently? How would you respond?
