The beginnings of life: First evidence of molecular evolution of RNA

Reading Time: 2 minutes Research from the University of Tokyo has “provided the first empirical evidence that simple biological molecules can lead to the emergence of complex lifelike systems” as they created an RNA molecule that “replicates, diversifies, and develops complexity, following Darwinian evolution.” This is the holy grail of naturalism—abiogenesis—not the diversification of life itself but the start […]

Did God Give You Kidney Stones?

Reading Time: 6 minutes I would like to introduce you to Matthew Sabatine who will contribute a few pieces that can also be found on his own blog – details below. Over to him: DNA is often given supernatural attributes and its uniqueness is often hard to separate from God as an origin. I have witnessed this understanding many […]

My Ancestry and DNA Analysis

Reading Time: < 1 minute This recently came up in discussion so I thought I’d post results from my DNA analysis that took place a few years ago. When it was first analysed, I had ancestry that stretched across to Western Europe and beyond. Here was my analysis from a few years ago: Europe West 39% Great Britain 23% Ireland/Scotland/Wales 19% Iberian […]

Oldest Hominin DNA Sequenced: Mitochondrial Genome of a 400,000-Year-Old Hominin from Spain Decoded

Reading Time: 3 minutes Using novel techniques to extract and study ancient DNA researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, have determined an almost complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a 400,000-year-old representative of the genus Homo from Sima de los Huesos, a unique cave site in Northern Spain, and found that it is related to the mitochondrial genome of Denisovans, extinct relatives of Neandertals in Asia. DNA this old has until recently been retrieved only from the permafrost.

New Research Backs Genetic ‘Switches’ in Human Evolution

Reading Time: 3 minutes I thought this might be topical, given new commenter Joseph’s (a JW) predilection for evolution illiteracy whilst simultaneously claiming intellectual victory over an evolutionary biologist and other’s complete pwnage of him. It is actually sad seeing psychology deny a person reality, because that is what is happening. Perseverance bias feeding confirmation bias, predicted by cognitive dissonance makes for pitiful reading. I wonder how his creationism both predicts these results and explains them?!
