Atheists Are Raising Funds to Help Those Affected by the Earthquake in Ecuador

Reading Time: 2 minutes Over the weekend, there was a devastating earthquake in Ecuador. As of this writing, more than 270 people have died, more than 2,500 people have been injured, and the horrors seems to grow larger by the hour.

Foundation Beyond Belief, an atheist organization I work with that supports secular charities, is currently holding a fundraiser to help people who have been affected by this tragedy.

How You Can Help an International Humanist-Led Mission Trip

Reading Time: 5 minutes As much as I dislike church-sponsored mission trips, especially short-term ones that don’t really help people in developing countries (but make for a great photo-op), I have to admire the way some Christians are willing to go overseas in order to help people they’ve never met. Even if proselytizing is included in the mix, those trips can make a big difference.

Conor Robinson wanted to create an atheist version of a mission trip — minus the proselytizing — and that’s why he began the Humanist Service Corps, a project of Foundation Beyond Belief. He’s currently leading a team in Ghana for his second stint overseas, and he’s looking for team members to join him beginning this summer.

He was kind enough to answer my questions about his work.

Help Foundation Beyond Belief Continue Putting Humanism in Action

Reading Time: < 1 minute Regular readers of this site know that I work with a group called Foundation Beyond Belief which encourages atheists to give money to various charities, supports on-the-ground volunteering in the U.S. and overseas (we have a team currently in Ghana), and raises funds for resources in emergency disaster situations. It’s a lot to juggle and our staff won’t be able to do it much longer unless we have more support.

We’re holding our year-end fundraiser right now and would really appreciate your generosity. As an added incentive, the first $20,000 raised will be matched, and there are all sorts of prizes available for individuals who make a contribution or groups that encourage members to give!
