We Attended the Answers in Genesis Women's Conference… and This is What Happened

Reading Time: 18 minutes Last weekend, Answers in Genesis — the ministry behind the Creation Museum — hosted a women’s conference focusing on modesty, marriage, and Creation. Unbeknownst to the organizers, I sent Kate (a contributor to this site) and Louise Kellar to the conference. The opinions expressed below are entirely their own. They wrote about their experiences separately and I have combined them into the narrative below. Since there was a lot of overlap, I’ve used Kate’s writing as the basis for the post with Louise’s observations in red.

Christian Pastor: Some Women Are Like Chinese Water Torture

Reading Time: 4 minutes Last night, I watched a sermon given by a fundamentalist Christian pastor talking about complementarianism, where only men can be the leaders in the church and home. I know some of you are sick of hearing about that because I’ve just giving them exposure, but in this case, we’re not talking about Pastor Steven Anderson and his church of a few dozen.

We’re talking about Pastor Mark Driscoll and his church of several thousands.

Coincidentally, he was talking about the same ideas Anderson presented the other day — the idea that wives should submit to their husbands. I’ll give Driscoll credit — he cloaks his misogyny in Bible verses much more discreetly than Anderson does, but the effect is the same. Just check out excerpts from the sermon starting at the 4:22 mark (transcribed here):

Christian Pastor: Feminists Really Just Want a Man to Put Them in Their Place

Reading Time: 2 minutes I was going to stop watching sermons by our friend Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona. But then I saw that the subject of his most recent talk was 1 Corinthians 14… and that’s the part of the Bible that includes this verse:

Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

And since Anderson isn’t exactly known for his appreciation of women, I had to listen. And transcribe. And share with all of you because I know how much you love it.

Christian Pastor: Unsaved People Are Not Capable of True Love

Reading Time: 4 minutes You guys, I need help. It’s a sickness. I’m obsessed.

I can’t stop watching Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona. He’s so ridiculously misogynistic (a.k.a. “Traditional”), treating his wife like property.

I was going to skip his latest video, but with a title like “Fornication is not Love,” how could I pass it up? I couldn’t. I had to watch. And you know you have to, too.

Christian Pastor: I Carry My Wife Around the House Every Day to Show Her Who’s Boss

Reading Time: 2 minutes Our favorite misogynistic pastor, Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is back to tell us about his morning rituals with his family. (His previous sermons include one about how his wife cooks for him and another about how women shouldn’t have a say in how our country is run.)

Anderson talks about how one of the things he does every morning is carry his wife across the house and back (3:41):

Christian Pastor: Women Should Have No Say in How Our Country is Run

Reading Time: 5 minutes Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is back with another one of his offensive, misogynistic sermons! (His sermon about how his wife cooks for him was incredibly popular, but this one is bound to be on the Greatest Hits album.)

The subject: How good it is to be old-fashioned.

Just as before, highlights are below, because I watched the whole damn thing…

A Response to Pastor My-Wife-Has-To-Cook-Three-Awesome-Meals-a-Day

Reading Time: < 1 minute You all remember Pastor Steven Anderson‘s ultra-offensive and misogynistic sermon on the qualities of a “virtuous woman” (a.k.a. The greatest sermon *ever*). I wrote about it here.

The folks at BetterOffDamned created a video response to the sermon — interspersed with their own commentary.

It’s awesome. I especially love the bits at 4:50 and 13:42 🙂
